Five Things to Think About Company Activities
Purpose:
To challenge managers to examine their companies' traditional activities and give them steps to being Change Agents.
Some activities, such as parties and social events, are hard to figure out. Baffled bosses and mystified managers sometimes feel they're getting complaints or even lawsuits from every direction. It can also be hard to "sell" the idea to other managers. This best practices checklist gives five steps to smooth your organization's way to better, more inclusive activities.
Five Things to Think About Company Activities

Some activities, such as parties and social events, are hard to figure out. Baffled bosses and mystified managers sometimes feel they're getting complaints or even lawsuits from every direction.
  1. Does a planned activity send a message that reflects your company goals and values?

  2. Ask others in the company how they react to an activity, before you plan it.

  3. Find something better. If there is a questionable activity that you want to change, replace it with something more fun, more interesting. Otherwise, you'll be left with some employees who think you changed it just for change's sake. Always look for something better, not just less offensive.

  4. Remind yourself to keep doing it. Check your vision or mission statement. Most of the language is focused around serving the customer. In other words, even your activities to support employees should be done with the customer in mind.

  5. Think about your organization's culture, in particular, the things people are fond of. There are lots of traditions out there that got started back when companies were mostly White, middle class men. As the workplace and marketplace change, companies may find that beloved activities or traditions in the workplace are simply endured by employees, rather than enjoyed.
