Too Old for the Client?
by Darcy Grote, Senior Consultant, ProGroup, Inc.
Dear Diversity Experts
We just came from the first meeting with the client and I don't know if we can pull off the deal. The client is one of those hot startups with a bunch of kids running the show. They're all 30 or younger and our sales team is 50 plus. I trust this bunch but it's clear the client doubts we can provide the solution they need. I have to wonder if it's because of the age of people I sent.

Sincerely,
Marne the Manager

Dear Marne
Think reeeeal hard for a sec. First, are you sure you did the best you could researching this company? If you want them to be your client, knowing more about their demographics ahead of time might help. Second, this team you sent... Could it be you found the best personnel for the job, or is it possible some of them were chosen because they look a lot like you?

The point is you have a chance to both overcome the client's bias, while maybe confronting your own. Pay close attention to the demographic makeup of your clientele. And from there, attend to your own choices in sending them a solution team.
